Youtubin' it

After 5 days of a brutal class schedule, I finally got a break from direct teaching, which meant no actual class time, only "office hours". Translation: today from 9:30 am to 7pm I've been sitting in a glass cubicle with my eyes transfixed on my computer screen. Sure there was the occasional interuption or from my pudgy little peng you (friend) who wanted to show me his tae kwon doe skills and talk about American food, or the frequent and often awkward comedy act between two of my lower level girl students who were content solely with berating each other in chinglish and exploding into histerics after back and forth-name calling. They did finally manage to get to their point which was inviting me and Brian to go to lunch tomorrow. Hey, a free meal is a free meal, even if I have to listen to high pitched school girls argue about mundane things.

That being said, majority of my day was spent acquainting myself with the world wide web, however with a connection speed reminicent of dial up. So to kill time, I checked my email, oh say, about 30 times over the course of the day, talked online, perused the news from a variety of sources including msnbc, cnn and the economist (for the best stories check out This Week's Top Headlines in the right hand column), sent out messages on facebook, and eventually got around to creating a youtube page (link to which is on the right hand side under Top Headlines). What I came to find is that youtube can make anyone feel important, even if no one is watching your clips.

Although it takes a long time just to upload one 3o-second clip onto youtube, with all the office hours and creeping boredom that comes with my 50 plus hour work week, I expect to have a plethora of China clips, teacher testimonials and maybe even a food journal of all the delicious things that you'd never find in the US up within the next few days. As I encounter more new and strange things in my daily life, you can bet they'll make their way onto my youtube page. This flip video camera is makes capturing random moments easy and more than makes up for the poor video quality and choppy footage. Point, shoot, click, upload and all of a sudden you've got a slice of China from anywhere in the world. Hooray for technology!
