Xuzhou Snack-Attack: Roujiamo (肉夹馍) Sandwiches (Click here for Video)

What to do on a warm Saturday night in Xuzhou? Take a walk through the networks of side and back alley streets and you'll find all sorts of cheap and delicious treats awaiting you. Last night I stumbled upon a hole in the wall restaurant serving this delicious Chinese version of a philly cheesesteak out of a sliding window, and man was it good.
The ingredients are simple: pan fried and chopped meat (beef, pork or chicken), green peppers, thinly sliced half-fried potatoes soaked in hot oil and pepper sauce, and spicy pickled cabbage all stuffed inside a flattened flour bun (similar to a minature pita). Sounds gross, but this is one of the tastiest things I've had to eat in Xuzhou. It's spicy, but not nuclear, greasy, but light enough that it won't sit like a stone in your stomach and very savory. It was so good that I wolfed mine down before I made it to the end of the street corner, at which point I regretted not buying two. Oh and did I mention that it is not only delicious, but portable and very cheap: only 3 yuan each!
